Nelly Miricioiu and Arthur Espiritu perform

Nelly Miricioiu, considered one of the most important singers of this century and a versatile singing actress, teams up with Arthur Espiritu, the country’s premier tenor, in a fund-raising for the Cultural Arts Events Organizer’s Young Artist Development Program. The concert, entitled “Passione,” will be held on April 9, Sunday, at 6 p.m. at the Ayala Museum, Makati City.
Both artists will perform arias and duets from best-loved operas, including “La Wally,”  “Adriana Lecouvreur,”  Puccini’s “Tosca,” Verdi’s “Rigoletto” and “La Traviata,”  Mozart’s “Cosi fan Tutte,” Rossini’s “Semiramide,”  Bellini’s “Il Pirata,” to name a few.

Miricioiu’s repertoire extends from Mozart and bel canto to Verdi, Puccini and the verismo to modern Italian operas, including those by Respighi and Zandonai, as well those by French and russian composers. Rodney Milnes, a famous opera critic of “Opera Monthly” in London, described her as “an extraordinary diva who can sing anything and sing it well.”  Damien Colas of La Discotheque de L'Avant-Scene opera of France called her as “a rare vocal phenomenon of this century."

Since her Covent Garden debut in 1982 as Nedda in “I Pagliacci” opposite John Vickers, Piero Cappuccili and Thomas Allen and her 1983 triumphant La Scala debut as Lucia di Lammermoor, Miricioiu has been heard in all major opera houses of the world. She has worked with the most prestigious conductors and directors.

Her leading roles include “Tosca” with Jose Carreras, Jose Cura, Neil Schicoff, Mimi with Placido Domingo, Violetta in “La Traviata” with Franco Bonisolli, Roberto Alagna, Renato Bruson, Alfredo Kraus and opposite many other leading artists of the day. Miricioiu found her niche in the bel canto repertoire. She is also dedicated in rediscovering forgotten operas.

Universally acclaimed for her luscious sound, beautifully constructed technique and exceptional theatrical stage presence, Michael Davdison wrote about her in an article in “Opera Magazine”: “The highly individual timbre of Miricioiu’s voice, her imagination and intensity, her exceptional range and sense of timing make for a unique talent.”

Returning after his successful debut performance with the Australian Opera as Rodolfo in Puccini’s “La Boheme,”  Espiritu is the first Filipino of this generation to perform at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan,  Baden Baden with the famed Franz Welser Most, St. Gellen in Switzerland, Magdeburg in Germany to name a few.  He is a recipient of the George London Award, a winner of the Belvedere Voice Competition in Vienna and the Metropolitan Opera Audition.

“Passione” is made possible through the CAEO partnership with Ayala Museum,  998.7 DZFE The Master’s Touch,  Lyric Piano and Organ and MusicArtes.
