"Gianni Schicchi  is composed by Giacomo Puccini with the libretto written by Giovacchino Forzano. This one act opera was originally composed to be the third and final part of three one-act operas called Trittico (The Triptych). Il Trittico has contrasting themes intended to be presented all together. Out of the three operas, Gianni Schicchi emerged as the most popular after it was first staged at the Metropolitan Theater in New York in 1912. Gianni Schicchi is performed on its own or with one other opera that was originally part of the Il Trittico.

The story takes from a scene in Dante Alighieri’s Inferno Canto XXX when Dante visits the circle of impersonators and meets Gianni Schicchi condemned in hell for impersonating the wealthy Buoso Donati. In Puccini’s opera, Donati’s relatives gather on his deathbed anticipating his favorable last will and testament, only to find out that all his wealth will be given to the monastery. Desperate, they turn to poor Signore Schicchi, father of Lauretta who is engaged to Rinuccio. The family of Buoso does not approve of this love affair because of Schicchi’s humble origins, but as soon as Schicchi suggests to dress up as Buoso to be able to change his will to one more favorable to the estranged family, they went with the plan. What followed are hilarious numbers of impersonation and deception which in the end help win the love affair of the young lovers, Lauretta and Rinuccio.
