BINONDO
A Tsinoy Musical

Synopsis

The times were changing. Political unrest enveloped the Philippines. The Cultural Revolution was in full swing in China. But in Manila’s Chinatown during the 1971 Mid Autumn Festival and under one of the brightest moons ever recorded in history, LILY, a Filipina night club singer and Ah Tiong, a mainland Chinese scholar, meet at the birthday celebration of the Chinese Love Deity Ge Lao. Lily, a hopeless romantic and Ah Tiong, a cynic about love and destiny, embark on a journey of love that defies all expectations.

But Lily’s local Chinese childhood friend Carlos who has long harbored hidden feelings for her will not make things easy for the star-crossed lovers as all three are forced to discover the different ways of giving and receiving love.

Spanning two decades and two countries, Binondo, A Tsinoy Musical explores how love prevails even in times of racial prejudice, political turmoil, absence and longing. This is a story of a deep and enduring love that transforms the lives of everyone who dares to put their hearts on the line.

The Producers

PhotoMa. Teresa Alava–Yong (fondly known as Maritess) was a vibrant soul, one who lit up any room whenever she entered. She was warm, compassionate and full of passion for life. Right up until her health deteriorated, Maritess strove tirelessly to help others, especially the underprivileged. Moved by their circumstances, she extended financial support to impoverished communities deprived of decent housing. She did all this unassumingly and in secret. It was only after she succumbed to cancer in 2017 that her husband discovered her zealous advocacy.

Who we are
Incorporated in 2018, the MARITESS ALAVA-YONG FOUNDATION, INC was created by Maritess’ husband, Mr. Micky Yong, to honor his beloved wife and to continue her legacy of giving. As a goodwill non-profit foundation, he has contributed more than P130 million to carry out its mission.

Our mission
To strive to inspire hope and improve the lives and communities by supporting the less privileged

Our vision
A better world as people everywhere will share the power of goodwill and giving

What we do
We endeavor on a daily basis to deliver on the legacy of Maritess Alava-Yong who was inspired by the words of Jesus, that He said, “It is more blessed to give than to receive.” ~Acts 20:35 In aiming to uplift the lives of the economically disadvantaged members of society, the MAY Foundation operates based on a 3-branched program by contributing to: Community Development, Education, and Cancer Care.
